Watch This With Rick Ramos

On this weeks episode of Watch This w/Rick Ramos I continue with the great comedy teams focusing on The Three Stooges - Larry Fine, and the Brothers Howard; Moses "Moe" Howard, Samuel "Shemp" Howard, and Jerome "Curly" Howard. I sit down and talk great memories of discovering The Stooges on 1980's syndicated television as well as their lasting and critically underrated legacy. This week I also include a look at The Farrelly Brothers 2012 re-imagining The Three Stooges Movie, a film that should have been a horrible mistake but turned into an enjoyable, fun, and respectful experience.

On this weeks episode of WatchThis w/Rick Ramos I start a month-long look at Comedy Teams beginning with two of my favorites. Although Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor made only four films together they are recognized as one of the great cinematic comedy pairings.  Ignoring their first film, Silver Streak, and their last, Another You, the focus is placed directly on 1980's Stir Crazy and 1989's See No Evil, Hear No Evil. I love both of these movies, and after watching them in preparation for the show, I have found so much more what I love in them. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed talking. Thanks for the continued support.

No Jokes, No Laughs as I'm joined by my good friend Ibrahim Chavez to discuss Tom McCarthy's dramatization of the Boston Globe investigation of the Catholic Church Pedophilia Scandal, Spotlight. Starring Michael Keaton, Stanley Tucci, Rachel McAdams, and Mark Ruffalo this is easily one of the best and most important films of the year. Along with Spotlight we take a look at Michael Cuesta's criminally underseen 1990 independent film L.I.E featuring a young (almost unrecognizable) Paul Dano and a frightening, unsettling, and ultimately brave and brilliant performance from Brian Cox. Both films deserve your attention and if this episode falls short of being entertaining I hope that it is at least thought-provoking. Best Wishes and Thank You for your continued support.

Hello, Hello, Hello! This week The Fortress of Ultimate Darkness welcomes my good friend Ibrahim Chavez. On this episode we talk the changing face of Masculinity in Film. From the transition of John Wayne thru Clint Eastwood, the Men's Movement, The Pick-Up Artist Movement, and general ideas on what it means to be men, we talk our experiences and insights into this confusing and - often - misinformed topic. Take a listen to Part I and let me know what you think. Part II going up shortly. Many Thanks & Much Love.

WatchThis w/RickRamos is back and I'm talking one of my idols . . . The Greatest Comic to ever step on stage, The Two Most Beautiful Words in the World of Comedy Mr. Richard Pryor. From the earliest days of watching him in his concert films Richard Pryor Live in Concert and Richard Pryor Live on the Sunset Strip, through Stir Crazy, The Toy, Blazing Saddles (co-writer), Blue Collar, and Bustin' Loose, this has truly been one of the great inspirations of mine and my fellow comics' lives. Hopefully you can hear the love and respect I have for this great artist. Thanks for listening.

This week I go on an epic rant on how bad some of the theatrical choices have been, focusing on Nancy Meyers/Robert De Niro embarassment The Intern as well as Baltasar Kormákur's Everest. That's a bit of a crapstorm before I get in to this weeks best film the Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners) directed Sicario - easily one of the best films of the year. Finally a movie in theaters that I can recommend without reservation. Hopefully you'll enjoy it as much as I did. This week I also tease upcoming episodes focusing on a new Richard Pryor documentary and a recent fascination I have had with The King of Filth Mr. John Waters. Hope you enjoy. I had a great time recording this one. Thanks for the continued support.

On this weeks episode of WatchThis W/RickRamos I take a look at Scott Cooper's new Crime Bio about James "Whitey" Bulger - the Johnny Depp headlining - Black Mass.  There's no way of talking "Whitey" Bulger without going back to Martin Scorsese's Academy Award winning The Departed. Take a listen and let me know what you guys think. Thanks for listening and the continued support.

On this weeks episode of WatchThis w/Rick Ramos I go back to basics, talking one movie that many of you have seen - Martin Scorsese's 1973 debut Mean Streets (ignoring student films and a Roger Corman produced independent) - and one that many of you have never heard of,  black-listed director Jules Dassin's French produced jewelry heist masterpiece Rififi. Two vastly different films from directors worlds apart. Other than both films being incredibly important to cinema, I have no idea of a connection. So sit back and listen as I ramble on about my love for these two films. I also take a look at Paul Weitz's new film Grandma featuring a wonderfully nuanced performance from the gret Lily Tomlin and an Oscar worthy performance from Sam Elliot. If you can find it, Grandma is impossible to dissapoint . . . at least it was impossible for me.

WatchThis fans, this week I sit down with my good friend Ibrahim Chavez to discuss the box office hit Straight Outta Compton (dir. F. Gary Gray). In this episode Chavez and I discuss the overall success of the film in depicting South Central Los Angeles of the late 80's and early 90's. In true WatchThis fashion we also use Compton's success to springboard to Dennis Hopper's 1988 Police and Gangbanger drama Colors as well as The Hughes Bros. 1993 Masterpiece Menace II Society. In this episode we take a look at race relations, violence, the Los Angeles Riots, and the - oftentimes - conflicting nature of the 1st Ammendment and Responsibilty in art. Take a lesson and enjoy as we reminisce and debate the challenging nature of these three films. As always, Thanks.

On this weeks episode of WatchThis W/RickRamos I talk about the passing of our favorite Heel, Roderick George Toombs, The Man that we grew up knowing as "Rowdy" Roddy Piper. It was a sad day, July 31st when we heard of the death of this great man. So this episode is about remembering the 80's, and in doing that, remembering the John Carpenter Classic THEY LIVE. This was a hard one for me. I hope you guys enjoy it. Thanks for your continued support.

On this weeks episode of WatchThis W/RickRamos I take a trip into the hell of human masochism and depravity with a look at a new film in theaters - Kyle Patrick Alvarez' THE STANFORD PRISON EXPERIMENT- a dramatic retelling of the famed experiment testing prison adaptation from the standpoint of prisoners as well as guards. One of the better films of the year, Alvarez' study of humanities fragile boundaries is a must-see. Alvarez' film lead me to a terrifying and sad story of one of America's worst and most cruel serial killers - Director John Borowski's CARL PANZRAM: THE SPIRIT OF HATRED & VENGEANCE - a truly horrible human being in a story that forces its viewers to examine the failings of a society that could allow a monster like this to be created. Not necessarily a good film, but a fascinating story well worth watching. I also take a few minutes to remember the Great WWF Wrestler/Entertainer - "Rowdy" Roddy Piper. He will be missed. Thank You for Listening and Your Continued Support.

This is, easily, on of the best documentaries I've ever seen. A film about the Blood, Sweat, & Tears that go into becoming the World Record Holder for the Classic Arcade Game Donkey Kong. I had a damn good time talking about this one, and I hope that I've had the chance to introduce you to a film that you may not have known about. As Always, Many Thanks!

Nothing better than two chubbies sitting down to do what chubbies do best . . . No, not eat, Assholes. Talk Movies. This week My Good Buddy Mike Black stops by The Fortress of Ultimate Darkness to discuss Today's Greatest Action Star, Dwayne "TheRock" Johnson. We go over a career that includes one of our favorite films 2003's THE RUNDOWN as well as 2010's FASTER, 2013's SNITCH, and his role in THE FAST & THE FURIOUS Action Series (specifically, the ridiculousness of Vin Diesel being able to kick his ass - Sorry Vin). We also talk his new film SAN ANDREAS as well as the horrible plans to revamp John Carpenter's 80's Classic BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA. With Mike Black there's no end to topics as we also discuss MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, video games, and what we have to look foward to over the rest of the summer. This was a hell of a good time. The summer has peaked! There's no way that it's going to get better than George Miller's new masterpiece, Mad Max: Fury Road; a film so beautifully imagined that it's impossible to anticipate anything better this summer.

To talk about the new film would be impossible without reviewing the previous two films, 1981's The Road Warrior and 1985's Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome. Sadly, I was unable to get a hold of a copy of the original Mad Max, but I think this is a pretty interesting talk, nonetheless. Take a listen and enjoy. Thanks for the continued support.

Coming to the end of the month, People. Allergies starting up, but I can't be stopped. Today I talk a Director I had previously written off . . . Tim Burton. After catching a revival screening of his 1994 masterpiece (at least I think it's a masterpiece) Ed Wood, a film that celebrates both filmmaking and blind perserverance, I knew that I had to talk about this films. I also get a bit into his 2003 film Big Fish, a good chance at re-visiting a film that I had - mostly - forgotten about. Hello Folks, Rick Ramos here. I wanted to get one last episode in before the end of the month. A few months back I got hit up by a WatchThis listener - Mr. Alan Lamberg. We started talking over email and I found a kindred spirit. He suggested we do one anothers' podcasts. So here goes . . . the first (of hopefully many) crossover episodes. So he set this up through Skype and the miracles of modern technology, I was able to sit down with a man I find myself respecting more and more. The entire Pacific Ocean couldn't stop this podcast from happening. So please enjoy my conversation (in Los Angeles) with Alan Lamberg (in Nagano, Japan) - Co-Founder of Corner Film Productions & Writer and Co-Producer of 2012's Casualties of the State, an exceptional Film Fan's Film. Ramos describes the brilliance of both films and the problems that he has with both of them. Either way Mr. Lee is a difficult subject and Ramos hopes that he does his two films justice. Tonight - once again - we pop open The Guinness and take a look at Cameron Crowe's 1989 Romantic/Comedy/Drama SAY ANYTHING (which Rick realizes how much he dislikes the film - far cry from his original feelings about the film). He also talks about Billy Wilder's 1960 Classic THE APARTMENT with Shirley McClaine, Fred McMurray, and the great Jack Lemmon, who Rick goes on a movie lovers' tangent, and - finally - the criminally underseen John McNaughton lost gem, MAD DOG & GLORY - a film that Rick is thrilled to talk about and recommend.
