Watch This With Rick Ramos

WatchThis fans, this week I sit down with my good friend Ibrahim Chavez to discuss the box office hit Straight Outta Compton (dir. F. Gary Gray). In this episode Chavez and I discuss the overall success of the film in depicting South Central Los Angeles of the late 80's and early 90's. In true WatchThis fashion we also use Compton's success to springboard to Dennis Hopper's 1988 Police and Gangbanger drama Colors as well as The Hughes Bros. 1993 Masterpiece Menace II Society. In this episode we take a look at race relations, violence, the Los Angeles Riots, and the - oftentimes - conflicting nature of the 1st Ammendment and Responsibilty in art. Take a lesson and enjoy as we reminisce and debate the challenging nature of these three films. As always, Thanks.

On this weeks episode of WatchThis W/RickRamos I talk about the passing of our favorite Heel, Roderick George Toombs, The Man that we grew up knowing as "Rowdy" Roddy Piper. It was a sad day, July 31st when we heard of the death of this great man. So this episode is about remembering the 80's, and in doing that, remembering the John Carpenter Classic THEY LIVE. This was a hard one for me. I hope you guys enjoy it. Thanks for your continued support.

On this weeks episode of WatchThis W/RickRamos I take a trip into the hell of human masochism and depravity with a look at a new film in theaters - Kyle Patrick Alvarez' THE STANFORD PRISON EXPERIMENT- a dramatic retelling of the famed experiment testing prison adaptation from the standpoint of prisoners as well as guards. One of the better films of the year, Alvarez' study of humanities fragile boundaries is a must-see. Alvarez' film lead me to a terrifying and sad story of one of America's worst and most cruel serial killers - Director John Borowski's CARL PANZRAM: THE SPIRIT OF HATRED & VENGEANCE - a truly horrible human being in a story that forces its viewers to examine the failings of a society that could allow a monster like this to be created. Not necessarily a good film, but a fascinating story well worth watching. I also take a few minutes to remember the Great WWF Wrestler/Entertainer - "Rowdy" Roddy Piper. He will be missed. Thank You for Listening and Your Continued Support.

On this weeks episode of WatchThis W/Rick Ramos I take a look at the new film PIXELS, but that's really only a jumping off point for the film I actually want to talk about, Seth Gordon's 2007 documentary on Competitive, Classic Video Gaming - KING OF KONG: A FISTFUL OF QUARTERS. This is, easily, on of the best documentaries I've ever seen. A film about the Blood, Sweat, & Tears that go into becoming the World Record Holder for the Classic Arcade Game Donkey Kong. I had a damn good time talking about this one, and I hope that I've had the chance to introduce you to a film that you may not have known about. As Always, Many Thanks!

Sometimes the world throws you a series of curves . . . You just have to go with it. This week on Watch This w/Rick Ramos, Ramos talks new films in theaters first with the new bio-pic about Brian Wilson (founding member of The Beach Boys) Love & Mercy. Showcasing the talents of John Cusack, Paul Dano, Elizabeth Banks, and Paul Giamatti. But the real find is The Sundance Sensation Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, easily one of the better films of the year. That's what Watch This is all about - finding the gems. Enjoy the episode and thanks for the continued support.
